10 Crucial Tips For Flying With Kids

This will be our second Disney Vacation with children.  The first trip was our family along with our best friends and their children.  We traveled with a 3-year-old, a 2-year-old, a 1 year old and an 8-week-old.  Call us crazy but we had the time of our lives! The plane ride is usually the most difficult part of the whole excursion.  We prepped a small backpack full of new toys for our 2-year-old to enjoy along with headphones to watch a movie.  The baby was easy she nursed and slept the whole time.  This time around though I will have my 4-year-old, my 2-year-old and my busy adventurous 8-month-old.  Here are the things that I have learned along the way that will help the airplane ride to Disney more enjoyable and a little less stressful.

  1. Snacks! Literally can’t have enough, when I think I’ve packed enough I always add more. Finger foods like popcorn, cheerios, fruit snacks are the easiest.  I try to not bring messy items as that just adds additional clean up and stress.  Food is a good distraction and keeps them from getting cranky.
  2. New toys. Kids get bored with their toys and when they are new, they are entertained for longer.  This time around we are surprising our kids with Mickey rolling suitcase and Minnie rolling suitcase that each will have a new toy inside for them take onto the plane
  3. Don’t over pack. Yes, I mean it! Less is more.  Between the stroller, car seats, and children you already have your hands full, you don’t need multiple suitcases as well.  I pack our family into one suitcase every trip we have been on.  Tip: Don’t pack diapers! Things that take up a lot of room just buy when you get there!
  4. Car seat bags. It’s a hassle bringing them through security, remember I said less I more! Check them in for free, I found my car seat bags on amazon and have been lifesavers.
  5. Extra change of clothes. Literally every child of mine has had a blow out on an airplane.
  6. Give yourself time. Have your kids walk the whole airport before boarding. Don’t let them ride in the stroller.  Stretch those little legs.
  7. Buy direct flights if possible. Not worth getting off and getting back on.  Trust me, direct is best with kids.
  8. Bring a baby carrier. For safety reasons they sometimes won’t let you wear it when taking off and landing but its nice to get up and walk around with the baby in the carrier to put them to sleep and then gently sit back down.
  9. Empty sippy cups. Fill them with water, nothing like having your child spill their drink.
  10. Wine Time. Last but not least buy a glass a wine if you are having a hard time. Just sit back and enjoy it, don’t worry so much about what others think.  You will land before you know it.
